New Church Building Project
In the late 1980s Pastor Earl Nevins, senior pastor of Bodega Bay Church at that time, had a vision to build a new church. The old church building, constructed in 1932, was not only small, with a capacity for only about 60 people, it was starting to deteriorate.
A neighbor to the church property donated more property, giving us enough land to start the project. However, there was one problem: we had no money for a building. About this same time, a piece of property was donated to Pastor Earl as a gift. Unselfishly, he immediately signed it over to the church. With the sale of this property, our church had the funds to begin the building project.
Building plans were drafted in the early 1990s, and the foundation was poured in 1993. Needless to say, this was a long term project that seemingly made little progress for several years. However, in the late 1990s, we undertook a renewed effort to finish the building, despite the fact that we had few skilled workers in the church. Members from the Adobe Christian Center in Petaluma took us under their wing, and spent many hours at building workdays helping to get the project going again. This act of kindness was just the motivation we needed.
By this time, the funds that we had at the outset began to run out, with no new sources in sight. As a congregation, we prayed that God would supply, and He did! As money was needed for projects, it seemed that the funds were always there in time.
On Easter Sunday 2004 the new church building opened its doors for service!
In February 2006 we were able to remove the old building built in 1932. In August and September, we completed the church parking lot paving and striping. We "changed gears" in our plans for a handicap ramp, and requested from the County Building Department that we install an elevator instead of the ramp. They agreed, and asked that we submit plans for cutting into the structure to add doors on both floors. We had the plans drawn up by an architect and reviewed by a structural engineer. We found that it was workable, so we submitted the plans to the Building Department. In November 2006, we received the approved plans from the county without any alterations to the plans. Praise God!
The reason for the change to an elevator is that it will make it much easier for people who need it to reach the downstairs. Rather than having to go outside and walk about 200 feet to reach the downstairs, they will never have to leave the building (especially desirable during inclement weather).
In all, we have been abundantly blessed by our Father throughout this entire project. We praise God for His provision, and give Him the glory in all things!
