At Bodega Bay Church we believe that ministry and outreach to those in our community is of utmost importance. (Jesus said) “I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.” (Matthew 25:40). In response to these words, we are involved in the following local ministries:
Mt. Gilead Bible Conference
Our church has supported the Mt. Gilead Bible Conference and Camp for many years with our prayers and financial support. We take part in many of the activities at the Camp, such as summer camps for kids, men’s retreats, women’s retreats, and other special functions. Two of our church members are also members of the Mt. Gilead board of directors. We work very closely with the Camp to reach as many people as possible for Christ.
Assisting Local People in Need
For several decades, our church has had an outreach to serve the poor which typically includes supplying food or gasoline for local folks who have an immediate need and nowhere else to turn. If the need is warranted, we also help with short-term housing, emergency medical needs or propane for cooking and heating provided we have available funds. We are able to help several dozen people each year. The funds for this ministry come both from our Church giving and from the wonderful generosity of individual people and organizations in the Bodega Bay community. It is a blessing to serve in a community where everyone works together so well.
Christmas Food Boxes
Each year at Christmas time, we put together many boxes of food to pass out to those families who may not have a Christmas celebration otherwise. Each family receives food items for Christmas dinner and extra food to help them through the Christmas season. Each box contains such items as meat (turkey or chicken), different types of cooking and baking items, fresh fruit and vegetables, spices, seasoning, canned food, cereal, plus various other items. We receive names of local people from our own contacts and from others within the community. In addition to the food items, many people add toys for the kids in those homes. Even though this ministry is organized through the church, donations of food, toys and funds are received from a variety of very generous people from the local community: Bodega Bay Fire Department, Bodega Bay Elementary School kids, Bodega Bay Marine Lab, Bodega Harbour Women’s Golf Club, Diekmann’s Bay Store, as well as donations from individual people in the area. The good folks at Fisherman’s Chapel, our other local Church, also help every year. We are in awe at the generosity of all the people who are involved in this outreach. It is a blessing to be a part of it.
Annual 'Blessings of the Fleet' and Fisherman's Festival
We have a long tradition of supporting the annual Bodega Bay Fisherman’s Festival. Several members of our church volunteer to help at the Festival. Pastors Jerry and Pat, who are retired law enforcement, assist with the security of the event. The pastors also take part in the annual Blessing of the Fleet by going on the lead boat in the boat parade. Part of the blessing includes prayer for the fishing season, and the safety of all those who are involved in the fishing industry.
Highway Cleanup
For several years, our church has taken on the duties of cleaning up the litter along the roadway for a two-mile stretch along Highway One, starting at Taylor Lane at Diekmann’s Bay Store and going north to the Salmon Creek Bridge just outside the town limits. We consider it a privilege to help keep our little town and coastline clean so that the thousands of visitors who travel to this beautiful coastline can enjoy the beauty that God created.
